A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
