A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
